The Process
During my first art show, it became apparent that not many people were aware that each illustration had been meticulously drawn by hand, most thought that they were nice designs made on the computer. It wasn't until I spoke up and described to people of the process I took to create each one that they would go back and really look at the illustrations.
Each illustration begins on graph paper, I said, after all I am human and I do need to have some structure in order to keep the illustration from veering off course. I spend a great deal of time dividing the space into pieces that I find interesting, intricate and that will help me achieve the over all shape of the desired look. I then use a pencil to create a path for the knotwork. Once I am satisfied with the pattern I go back and "fatten" up each line to give the over-under look of knotwork.
From here, I copy the image and test which areas to fill in with either solid ink, stippling or simply leave the space empty. Next, using the aid of a light table, the illustration is penciled onto acid-free drawing paper. I spend a lot of time during this stage to assure each line is equal in weight, the symmetry is correct and that my "over and unders" are even.
Using rapidograph pens, I then ink in the areas with black or colored inks that will complete and balance the illustration, bringing it to life. The final step is to hide my initials within the drawing and sign the back. No illustration is signed on the front.
Each illustration takes any where from 20-80 hours to complete depending on the size and complexity. I am very meticulous about my work and strive to make each design as complex and delicate as possible. I exert an infinite amount of patience creating each one.
